NERC has a multi-disciplinary operation encompassing a wide range of scientific, engineering and energy skills that focus both on applied and fundamental research in the field of new and renewable energy sources as well as on energy conservation. In this essence, NERC’s role is to act as a bridge between academia and the energy industry through 16 energy experts, 2 environmentalists, 3 economists, thus enabling coherency of research, design, testing and promotion of energy related topics.
In the particular case of Jordan national bio-energy R&D programmes, research on options for using biomass as a source of bio-fuels and energy, the Committed policies for developing Bio-energy systems in the National Strategy for Restructuring Energy Sector in Jordan for the year 2020, and have been launched by Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in the year 2008.
NERC is taking the role of research and development activities related to resource assessment like biomass potential, Biomass RTD, and chemical analysis. Assessing available Technologies including organic waste to energy, biomass boilers and stoves for domestic heating, gasification, palletizing machinery and pellet boilers.
The Future plan research activities include the development of energy crops for bio-fuels, biomass systems for the heating requirements of low energy houses, the further development of systems which combine biomass and solar energy, Biomass gasification, advanced pellet boilers, and Non-technical research regarding strategies for increased market penetration of bio-energy.
A circulating fluidized bed has been manufactured locally and successfully operated since 2006. This CFB was designed to burn 50 kg/hr of biomass residues and working on bubbling fluidization. Olive residues and oil shale have been tested successfully using this CFB.
NERC has equipped with all necessary instruments in order to analyse the fuel properties, like:
