Oil shale resources of the world are abundant and next to coal, oil shale is considered to be one of the largest fossil new energy source in the world Oil shale is defined as a sedimentary rock that contains solid combustible organic matter in a mineral matrix. Oil shale in Jordan had been know to occur from ancient times. It possesses an enormous indigenous valuable sources of energy. The reserves of extractable shallow and near surface and close to the main infrastructures are virtually huge and equivalent to about 40 billion tons capable of producing 40 billion barrels of oil. Geological studies and exploration activities have shown that good quality oil shale deposits are widely distributed in many parts of the country.
